Clutch & Brake Selection for Press Applications
The total torque transmitted to all press main or eccentric gears is determined as follows:
Total Torque (in. lbs.) = 2000 TC (tan A)
Where: Cos A = (b2 + c2 - a2) / (2bc)
a = 1/2 press stroke
b = length of connection
c = a + b - d
d = rated tonnage distance
T = Rated press capacity in tons
The drive shat torque is equal to the total torque multiplied by the strokes per minute (SPM) divided by the RPM of the drive shaft.
Drive shaft torque = Total Torque (SPM) / RPM

Example:
Clutch/Brake requirement for press.
Rated 30 Ton @ 0.196 from bottom of stroke
Stroke = 120mm. (4.72)
Connecting arm length = 31(790 mm)
Crankshaft diameter = 100mm
Torque = 2000Tc (Tan A)
Where:
a = press stroke (in inches) =2.36
b = length of connection (in inches) =31.00
c = a + b - d = 33.16
d = rated tonnage distance (in inches) =0.196
A = Cutting angle; Cos A = (b2 + c2 - a2) / (2bc) =0.9995
=1o48'
Torque
= 2000 x 30 x 33.16 x 0.0314
= 62,473 in.lbs.
= 7060 Nm
