Nexen 5H Tooth Clutch Keeps The Presses Running
Newspaper presses have many ink rollers that transfer ink to the printing drums during a production run. The ink rollers are fed by pumps that are engaged / disengaged by a clutch to maintain the optimal amount of ink on the rollers.

The Customer’s Problem
The customer’s Goss printing press was having frequent problems with the ink pump drive clutches not disengaging. This was causing the ink rollers to be fed too much ink creating a huge mess and lost production time. The problem was traced to the 45 Tol-O-Matic multiplate clutches that engage and disengage the ink pumps. Due to their open design, ink was working its way into the clutches and hardening causing them to not release. The clutches can be disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt, butthis is a time consuming costly process and causes lost production time. The average life of these clutches was six months and with 45 units the problem was constant. The customer desperate for a solution, called the local distributor, who in turn contacted their Nexen representative for assistance.
Nexen’s Solution
When Nexen’s representative examined the ink pump drive system, a number of weaknesses were uncovered. Not only was the Tol-O-Matic multi-plate friction clutch not sealed, it used a rigid coupling to drive a bearing supported shaft. This arrangement provided no misalignment capability and was overly complicated. We proposed a custom 5H20P-E tooth clutch (pt#911306) with an integral flexible coupling. This solution provides a sealed product with misalignment capability and eliminates the output shaft bearing support. A tooth clutch uses teeth to transmit the power instead of friction discs and in this low rpm application it will provide greater life and not be affected by potential contamination. The conversion was very easy.
Nexen’s Advantage
Reliability, Performance, Exceptional Design, and Product Support!
Nexen’s 5H20P-E tooth clutch keeps the ink mist out, eliminating the clutch seizures. In addition, it simplified the overly complex drive configuration while providing misalignment capabilities that will extend the clutch bearing life. This has eliminated the ink messes, greatly improved productivity, and reduced maintenance expenses. The 5H20P-E has no friction facings to wear out and will provide many times the service life of the Tol-O-Matic clutch. New clutches or repair parts, if ever required are readily available from the customer’s local distributor. The customer is so impressed with Nexen’s products and support that many other motion control problems are being explored.
