DB Caliper Brake as Holding Brake on Tow Boat Capstan
Problem
A river tow boat, using a hydraulic motor to drive the capstan, reported the motor would no longer hold the capstan in a locked position. This created a risk that material being towed by the vessel would pull away from it, thereby creating a hazardous situation for both personnel and equipment.
Solution
A 24-inch disc mounted to a flexible coupling and two hydraulically actuated NexenDB caliper brakes completely resolved the problem. The DB like most Air Champ models, performs equally well with hydraulic actuation as long as pressures are within the limits of the unit and a zero pressure sump is incorporated.
