BD Brake on Wire Drawing Machine

Problem

A major manufacturer of electrical equipment processes a very costly "moly-tungsten" wire at one of its wire drawing plants. After the wire is drawn, annealed and coated, it is wound on a reel. When the processing line was stopped, there was considerable coast in the reel which, if a problem existed in any part of the process, could result in a considerable loss of the expensive wire material.

Solution

The rewind process is driven by a 15 hp DC which is driven through a V-belt pulley to the input shaft of an 8-speed drive-all gear box. The output shaft of the gearbox is coupled to a jackshaft upon which the reel is mounted. The customer determined that the reel should be stopped in one second or less to minimize los of material under emergency conditions. The total weight of a fully loaded, 18-inch diameter reel is 1200 pounds and the maximum speed of the reel is 250 RPM. The customer chose a Nexen BD brake with a 24-inch disk, operating at air pressure settings of 30-35 p.s.i. They chose the BD to allow extra capacity should they choose to speed up the line or alter the process. A scrapped reel of the material is worth $9.00, a reel of finished product is valued at $13,000. Therefore, the cost of the BD brake, which was subsequently installed for all stopping functions within the line, was negligibl
