EC450®/EC600™ Fan Clutches

The EC450 Fan Clutch features fully on/off electromagnetic engagement. The system includes a thermal switch and refrigerant pressure switch that engage the fan clutch only when coolant temperature or air conditioning system pressure calls for increased airflow (typically 10-percent or less of total driving time). This design produces more accurate temperature control, within a narrower range, resulting in faster warm-up and improved fuel economy. It also provides more effective cab heating, more efficient air conditioning system operation and a reduction in drag that returns horsepower to the drivetrain (a viscous drive slips at high speeds and is never fully disengaged).

Light- and Medium-duty Applications

The EC450 is designed for light- to medium-duty diesel engines without onboard compressed air, as an upgrade from a viscous or direct drive fan clutch. Current diesel engine applications include the Cummins B, Caterpillar 3116 and Navistar I6 and V8, to name only a few. Light-duty aftermarket applications include delivery trucks and passenger pickup trucks (primarily Dodge Ram with Cummins diesel engine). Medium-duty applications range from Navistar, Chevrolet C-Series and GMC TopKick® trucks and buses, to Oshkosh, Ottawa, Ford and Freightliner medium-duty vehicles.

Features

  • Electromagnetic actuation
  • On/off operation
  • Precise engine temperature control
  • Maintenance-free design

Benefits

  • No air supply required
  • No slip operation for more efficient cooling
  • Increased fuel economy
  • Improved system performance
  • Lower emissions
  • Warmer cab
  • Improved air conditioning performance
  • Higher reliability

For precise temperature control, the fan clutch engages only when it’s needed—about 10 percent of the time. That means your vehicle will operate at maximum fuel efficiency 90 percent of the time, saving you money. When operating at maximum fuel efficiency, you’ll gain horsepower, enabling you to haul heavier loads and tackle steep grades.

You’ll save time and money with the EC450 and EC600 thanks to minimal installation and zero lifetime maintenance. Reliable Horton products that give you an even cooler bottom line.

Applications

  • Medium-duty (Class 5, 6 & 7) trucks
  • Buses and motor coaches
  • Off-highway equipment
