Smooth, Adjustable Torque for Tension Control and Test Rigs

Merobel, in France, makes electromagnetic powder (EMP) brakes and clutches, permanent-magnet torque limiters and the electronics that control them – leaders in wire, cable and web tension control and in torque simulation on test rigs. Norman G Clark supplies and supports Merobel in Australia.

What Do You Need to Do?

Your industry

Hold Tension as a Roll Unwinds

A brake on the unwind keeps wire, film or paper taut as the roll gets smaller.

Control Speed and Torque Separately

A clutch on the rewind or in a drive line slips at a set torque.

Limit Torque Without Power

A permanent-magnet limiter slips at a set torque – no supply needed.

Load a Test Rig

Simulate variable torque on automotive and aerospace test benches.

How it works

How an EMP Brake Works

Torque you set with current.

Torque from Magnetic Powder

Between the rotor and the housing is a gap filled with fine magnetic powder. When current flows in the coil, the powder lines up along the magnetic field and binds the two together; the more current, the more torque. With no current the powder is loose and only a small residual torque remains.

Torque depends on current, not speed, so it can be set precisely and held while the unit slips continuously – which is what keeps tension steady as a roll changes size.

Why Merobel, through Norman G Clark

Tension Control Specialists

Wide Range

10 sizes from 2 to 1,000 Nm, with up to five cooling versions each.

Linear Control

Torque follows current – easy to control from a simple supply or tension controller.

Smooth and Quiet

No friction surfaces to grab or chatter, even at very low speed.
