Merobel

Electromagnetic Powder (EMP) Brakes

Merobel’s most popular range: through-bore EMP brakes that keep a steady tension on unwinding wire, cable, paper, film and foil – and simulate variable torque on test rigs. Choose from 10 sizes and up to five cooling versions.

How it works

How It Works

Torque from Magnetic Powder

Between the rotor and the housing is a gap filled with fine magnetic powder. When current flows in the coil, the powder lines up along the magnetic field and binds the two together; the more current, the more torque. With no current the powder is loose and only a small residual torque remains.

Torque depends on current, not speed, so it can be set precisely and held while the unit slips continuously – which is what keeps tension steady as a roll changes size.

Why Merobel EMP brakes

Made for Tension

Through Bore

Easy to fit on converting, printing, wire and packaging machines.

Match the Heat

Pick natural, finned, fan or water cooling to suit the slip power.

Precise

Torque proportional to current, stable at any speed.

Test Rigs

A cost-effective way to apply variable torque to engines and gearboxes.

How to choose

How to Size One

Torque

Rated torque must exceed the highest torque the job needs – allow for any gear or belt ratio.

Heat

Slip torque × slip speed is heat. It must stay under the rated power of the version you choose.

Residual Torque

Must be lower than the smallest torque the job needs.

Speed

Keep within the size’s minimum and maximum speed.
