How it works
How Tension Control Works
Tension control keeps paper, film or foil pulled to the same tightness as it winds or unwinds. A sensor measures the roll or the web, and a controller adjusts the air to the brake or clutch.
Measure the Roll
An ultrasonic sensor measures the roll’s diameter. As the roll shrinks, the controller lowers the brake torque so the tension stays steady.
Or Count the Turns
A proximity switch can count a target on the roll shaft instead, so the controller can work out the diameter from speed.
Dancer Control
A dancer is a weighted roller the web runs under. If the tension rises it lifts; if it falls it drops. The controller reads its position and corrects.
Brake on the Unwind
The tension brake slips all the time while the roll unwinds, and the controller trims its torque to keep the web tight.
