Multiple Disc Electromagnetic Clutches

Stacking several friction discs multiplies the torque, giving one of the smallest sizes for the torque of any clutch. They run dry or in oil, which makes them ideal inside multi-speed gearboxes and machine tools.

The Range

MD and MW Series

Multiple disc clutches and brakes for starting or stopping at speed; separate drive cup for easy gear or pulley connection.

  • 18 – 12,000 Nm
  • Separator springs for quick release

How it works

How It Works

Engaging

Power to the coil turns it into an electromagnet. The magnetic flux crosses a small air gap and pulls the armature hard against the friction face, so the two turn together – electrically switched, but transmitting torque mechanically.

Releasing

Switch the power off and springs pull the armature back, opening a small air gap so the parts turn freely. Cycling is just switching the coil on and off; once engaged there is no slip, so torque transfer is 100% efficient.

Why multiple disc

Big Torque, Small Package

Compact

Several discs give one of the best torque-to-size ratios.

Wet or Dry

Run in a gearbox oil bath or stand-alone.

Fast in Oil

Channels in the discs let oil clear quickly for fast response.

Cool Running

In oil, the oil carries heat away from the discs.
