Ogura tension control

Magnetic Particle Clutches

In a magnetic particle clutch, torque follows the current almost exactly and doesn’t change with speed. That makes them ideal for winding wire, film, foil and tape at a steady tension, and for fast-cycling machines.

The range

Tension Control Clutches

OPC Clutches

Industrial particle clutch with fast response and stable torque; sealed.

  • 0.5 – 8 Nm

OPL Slip Clutches

Permanent-magnet particle slip clutches and drag brakes – no power needed.

  • 0.02 – 0.4 Nm

HC Hysteresis Clutches

No friction contact at all – very wide control range for fine wire tension.

  • 0.05 – 1 Nm

How it works

How Magnetic Particle Units Work

Particles That Lock Together

A cavity between the input and output is filled with fine magnetic powder, much like iron filings. With power on, the magnetic field binds the particles into a firm “slush” that carries torque across – the more current, the stronger the bond.

Torque follows the current almost in a straight line and doesn’t change with speed, so the unit can slip continuously at a set torque – exactly what tension control needs. With no power the powder sits loose, leaving only a small drag.

Why magnetic particle

Simple, Precise Control

Accurate

Torque is almost linear with current – a simple controller does the job.

Stable

Torque stays the same across the speed range.

Slips All Day

Good heat dissipation allows constant slip within the rated wattage.

Long Life

The powder wears gradually, not suddenly.
