Protect Big Diesel and Gas Engines Before Damage Is Done
Since the early 1980s, Flight Systems in Pennsylvania has made engine protection for large and medium diesel and natural gas engines. Its Model 550 Engine Saver warns the operator or shuts the engine down the moment pressures or temperatures stray from normal. Norman G Clark supplies and supports Flight Systems in Australia.

Solutions
What Do You Need to Protect?
Mining & off-highway. Haul trucks and heavy machines.
Power generation. Generator sets and stationary engines.
Marine. Marine engines (with approved hose).
A Large Diesel or Gas Engine
Detect low coolant, oil loss, overspeed and wear before they wreck the engine.
The range
Model 550 Engine Saver®
The Model 550 monitors your engine through its full RPM range and alerts the operator – or shuts the engine down – if any temperature or pressure moves away from normal for the actual operating conditions.
Monitored Levels and Adjustment
Factory settings can be adjusted to suit the engine.
| Parameter | Adjustment range | Factory setting |
|---|---|---|
| Turbo enable | Fixed | 8 psi |
| RPM enable | 300 – 1,800 rpm | 500 rpm |
| Overspeed | 1,800 – 3,000 rpm | 2,500 rpm |
| Crankcase pressure | Fixed 8, 10 or 15 in H₂O | 10 in H₂O |
| Idle oil pressure | 5 – 15 psi, modulated | 12 psi |
| Run oil pressure | 25 – 50 psi, modulated | 42 psi |
| Idle coolant pressure | 0 – 9 psi, modulated | 3 psi |
| Run coolant pressure | 5 – 30 psi, modulated | 15 psi |
| Temperature | 65 – 140 °C | 100 °C |
| Shutdown delay | 1 – 60 s | 20 s |
Alarm and Display Options
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| 57-A550-30 remote status alarm | Audible alarm and light whenever a fault is detected |
| 57-A550-40 digital annunciator | Displays the values being monitored in six critical areas |
| 57-A550-41 digital annunciator | Alarm plus instant check of engine values |
Why the Model 550
Complete Engine Protection
Detects
Low or lost coolant, oil loss, worn rings, holed piston, fuel dilution, overspeed, overheating, worn bearings, blocked pumps or breathers, governor failure, loose radiator cap, scored cylinder.
Shows the Fault
Built-in status panel (remote optional) with flashing fault lights, even after shutdown.
Trend Data
Analogue outputs for trend analysis and maintenance forecasting.
Rugged
Weatherproof, tamper-proof and lockable; protected against reverse polarity and nearby arc welding.
How it works
How the Engine Saver Works
Trip points that follow the engine.
Watches Pressure, Temperature and Speed
The Engine Saver monitors oil pressure, coolant pressure, crankcase pressure, coolant temperature, turbo boost and engine speed. Instead of fixed alarms, the oil and coolant pressure trip points move with engine RPM – lower at idle or when the engine is lugged down, higher at speed.
Catches Faults Early
Because it compares readings with what is normal for the actual operating conditions, it picks up small changes – a worn pump, a blocked breather, a leaking piston – long before an operator would see them on the gauges, and without false alarms.
Warns, Then Shuts Down
A heavy-duty relay can sound an alarm, give a pre-shutdown warning, then stop the engine. The status panel shows which fault tripped, even after shutdown.
How to choose
Installation Essentials
Location
Mount above the oil, coolant and crankcase pick-off points, pressure connections facing down, protected and visible.
Pressure Lines
Armoured flexible hose, draining down to the unit with no loops; min. 3/16" bore.
Pick-Off Points
Oil at the piston cooling gallery; coolant at the water pump outlet; crankcase at a rocker cover.
RPM Signal
Magnetic pickup on the flywheel or cam gear, tacho generator, or alternator “R” terminal.
Why the Engine Saver, through Norman G Clark
Fewer Rebuilds, Lower Costs
Proven
Cummins supplies it on up-rated K series engines (Cummins p/n 3627061).
Catches What Gauges Miss
Detects faults that normally go unnoticed until they cause major damage.
Lower Costs
Reduces warranty costs on rebuilds and maintenance spend.
