How it works
How Washpipes Work
The washpipe carries drilling mud from the fixed gooseneck into the turning top drive. Two mechanical seals – one fixed, one turning – keep the mud in at high pressure.
What’s in a Washpipe
Upper and lower nuts hold the assembly. A floating seal carrier lets the two seals line up with each other as the drive turns.
Check Before Fitting
Swap tapered stem liners for straight ones, and check run-out and end float are within limits – otherwise the seals won’t last.
Fit It Carefully
Tighten the nuts with the bar provided – never a hammer. Both nuts have left-hand threads.
Seals the Right Way Up
Each seal is marked. The top seal is fixed and faces down; the bottom seal turns and faces up. The notches fit over the dowels.
