Site Vehicle Airflow Testing Of Radiator Cooling Fans

Product Type:

Equipment Required

  • Anemometer (Testo 410i model supplied)
  • Tachometer and sensing tape
  • PPE for site (hard hat, safety boots, high vis, safety glasses)
  • Hearing protection for use during testing

OH&S

  • Perform SWMS / JSA as per site requirement prior to commencement.
  • Identify key risks associated with Working at Heights, Confined Space and Pinch Points.
  • Wear appropriate PPE as identified above and hearing protection during testing.

Testing Procedure

Prework

  1. Install Testo Smart app to read and record test results.
  2. Where possible inspect existing fan for wear or damage

Fan Speed Testing

  1. Install tachometer sensing tape on fan blade(s).
  2. If run fan runs off a variable speed fan drive, enable fan to run at 100% fan speed (depending on application this may vary if the fan is clutch-driven, oil-driven or hydraulic).
  3. Run vehicle up to max engine or drive speed.
  4. Confirm speed with tachometer if possible.

Air flow testing

  1. If possible, mark air flow measuring points with paint / tape on the outer louvres of the sound attenuation package to ensure the same points are taken. Avoid areas where walkways or other objects impede testing.
  2. Take testing points in the pattern as per Figure 1 example. Ensure anemometer vane is perpendicular to airflow and positioned between radiator bars or attenuation struts for testing.
  3. Hold in each position for 30 – 60s to ensure reading stabilizes.
  4. Record measuring position #, air flow reading and time.
  5. In order to reach all testing positions, utilize EWP or other appropriate equipment if needed. Follow correct site Working At Heights procedure.
  6. Once all outside test data points have been recorded shut down engine and lock out vehicle if required.

Test Results

  1. Average positional test results.
