How it works

How an Electromagnetic Clutch Works

Switched electrically, driven mechanically.

Power on: Engaged

Power to the coil turns it into an electromagnet. The magnetic flux crosses a small air gap and pulls the armature hard against the friction face, so the two turn together – electrically switched, but transmitting torque mechanically.

A brake works the same way, except the friction face is fixed, so the armature stops the shaft.

Power-Off Brakes Work the Other Way

In a spring-applied (power-off) brake, springs clamp the friction disc whenever there is no power – so the load is held if power fails. Power to the coil pulls the pressure plate back and releases the brake.
